UNIFORM QUESTIONS
What is the Gi?
The “gi” is the traditional uniform associated with martial arts. Often referred to as a “kimono”, you likely have a picture in your mind of what it looks like
already. It’s common in most forms of martial arts, including judo, karate, and
taekwondo. The word “gi” comes from the Japanese term“Keikogi” or “Judogi”.Keiko means practice; gi means dress or clothes. A gi consists of 3 pieces: the gi jacket, pants, and belt.
Different parts of a gi are strategically utilized for grips, chokes, guards, and
other techniques during training. Typically, it is heavily stitched and usually
made of cotton to withstand the rigors of daily practice.
I have my own Gi from another academy with their logo on it.... Can I use it?
Believe it or not...WE DON’T CARE! You’re welcome to wear any gi you already own, provided it is appropriate for jiujitsu (Karate gi’s fall apart immediately when used in grappling).
We don’t force anyone to buy our branded gear, making it more accessible to everyone.
Our general motto is “just train” so we like to help facilitate that with our unrestrictive policies.
What should I bring to my first class?
For Gi classes, bring some water and some light clothing (shorts/t-shirt) you
can work out in, and we will provide you with one of our loaner gi’s to practice in for
your first class. For Nogi classes, board shorts (no zippers, buckles, or
pockets, etc.) or spats/leggings and a t-shirt or rashguard plus some water is
all you need to jump in! We have water you can refill as needed!
