GENERAL QUESTIONS
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu good exercise?
Absolutely! Jiu-Jitsu can be one of the best forms of total body exercise. We’ve had people lose tremendous amounts of weight training in Jiu-Jitsu, and others who have been fit their whole lives find a new gear and make gains they were not expecting.
We have even had firefighters (a job requiring tremendous physical fitness) tell us there is nothing like jiujitsu to take your fitness level to new heights!
I see you have both Gi and Nogi classes at Expedition BJJ. What is the difference between the two?
The main difference between the two is the clothing we wear during practice. In our Gi classes we wear the traditional “kimono” style garment and we are allowed to use ,the clothing to help us perform techniques. In the Nogi classes we wear just shorts and a t-shirt or rashguard and grabbing the clothing is not allowed. Both are accessible to beginners and are just a preference choice for the individuals personal personal articipating.
Some enjoy the Gi, others Nogi more...
They both are complimentary to the other and share a common conceptual framework. We encourage a good mix of
both!
I am a woman: Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for me?
YES! Jiu-Jitsu is a fantastic sport and martial art for women. It can contribute to your self-defence abilities, foster a sense of community and belonging, and of course, help with physical and mental fitness!
Jiu-Jitsu is unlike other martial arts that emphasize aggressive striking techniques and instead focuses on grappling, where technique and leverage can be applied to help subdue opponents making it a great choice for women looking to learn self defence.
It’s a fluid and adaptive activity that perfect for women looking to explore their capabilities.
Is there an Age limit for the classes?
No! We offer different class options for students ranging from 4 years old all the way up to 60+!
As long as you have a good attitude and are ready to try your best, Jiu-Jitsu can be accessible to anyone.
What happens in a typical class?
We generally do a short warmup game that's jiujitsu specific, then break right into the good stuff, working scenarios that help to emphasize the common opposing
objectives of grappling in small-sided games.
This allows us to waste no time (typical
of many martial arts programs, but not ours!) and get you developing real skills that you can see working and improving in real time.
I am completely new to Jiu-Jitsu: Where does my journey start?
We specialize in getting people new to jiujitsu started on the right foot! We have our classes split by experience level with our less experienced students participating in specialized activities with others new to the sport.
You’ll spend your first few months working in this specialized section of the class with others just beginning, before you have the option of participating with the more advanced students working on more complex tasks.
This helps to keep you working and learning without becoming overwhelmed, tailoring the challenge to your individual experience level.
Are there any contracts I have to sign in order to enroll?
NO! We don’t require any contracts or long-term commitments from our members, and memberships can be cancelled at any time with 30 days' notice.
